Banned & Recovered: Artists Respond to Censorship More than 60 artists interpret banned or challenged books in their chosen medium in response to the suppression of literary art. Curator Hanna Regev has assembled more than 60 artists, each interpreting a banned book of their choice. Collectively," says Regev, "the work initiates an important undertakingthe recovery of fragments of our censored history. We felt that the pairing of visual and graphic artists with these banned and threatened books was a natural one. After all, what better group to interpret suppressed works than visual artists who are already so attuned to the threat of censorship. The show is a powerful reminder of the fragility of our freedoms, many of which are being chipped away by the Patriot Act. It is a powerful testament to the irrepressible creative spirit.

LIBRARY: Library Reader's Theater Performances to Commemorate "Banned Books Week". A companion event to Tuesday's (September, 30) "Banned Books Out Loud" event in the University Bookstore will take place Monday (September, 29), from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Library's 1st floor Events area. The annual American Library Association's Banned Books Week is September 24-October 4, 2008. The Library is recognizing this year's theme, "Closing Books Shuts Out Ideas", by inviting the campus community to participate in two different ways. #1Two original 'reader's theater'-style performances will be held, one beginning at 10:00 a.m. and repeating at 1:00 p.m., running about 45 minutes, utilizing news reports of book challenges in school and public libraries since last year's Banned Books Week. The events and the people involved in the challenges will be brought to life as readers from ISU students, faculty, and staff read their vignettes.#2Two: From 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. repeat performance, the campus is invited to come to the Library's Events area at their leisure. A looped PowerPoint of information about challenged books will be running. The challenged books mentioned in the PowerPoint will be on display. A 'wall of challenged books' display may be viewed. Informational brochures about challenged books will be available. BOOKSTORE:BANNED BOOKS OUT LOUD An event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3: 15 p.m. Sept. 30 in the University Bookstore. All members of the community are invited to attend Banned Books Out Loud and take turns reading from their favorite Banned Books.

One: Two original 'reader's theater'-style performances will be held, one beginning at 10:00 a.m. and repeating at 1:00 p.m., running about 45 minutes, utilizing news reports of book challenges in school and public libraries since last year's Banned Books Week. The events and the people involved in the challenges will be brought to life as readers from ISU students, faculty, and staff read their vignettes. Copies of many of the challenged books, most of them children's or young adult level, will be available for viewing during the event and may be checked out after September 29. Teachers are urged to bring their classes to the 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. performances. Two: From 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. repeat performance, the campus is invited to come to the Library's Events area at their leisure. A looped PowerPoint of information about challenged books will be running. The challenged books mentioned in the PowerPoint will be on display. A 'wall of challenged books' display may be viewed. Informational brochures about challenged books will be available. Brown-bagging is welcome; swing by the "Cup & Chaucer Caf" before coming to the Events area! For more information on this event, including a list of the books being covered, or if you are bringing a whole class please contact Marsha Miller ( mmiller24@indstate.edu or call x 2606). Readers are still needed for the reader's theater. No experience is needed, but being able to perform at both 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. is preferred. ISU students, faculty, and staff are all invited to participate.

Imagine if we never knew about Watergate? Or The Pentagon Papers? Or the Iran-Contra arms for hostages deal? Or the Abu Ghraib prison abuses scandal? Just imagine the stories that would have gone unreported were it not for journalists confidential sources. New Jersey Attorney Bruce Rosen and reporter Tim Nostrand of The Record will lead a discussion on The Reporters Privilege: Protecting the Sources of Our News which examines the chilling effect the suppression of the flow of information would have on our lives. Rural public libraries many times find themselves a target of well-intended groups who want to "white wash" the library collection. In Paulding County, Ohio, we take a firm stance on the freedom of each citizen to read and to access the information and ideas they want to in order to make decisions and draw conclusions. At the main library in Paulding, we will feature in a prominent display books that have been challenged or banned. Our staff will be prepared to answer questions about Intellectual Freedom.

Celebrate the Freedom to Read in Oregon; Banned Books Week 2008 September 27 – October 4 The Oregon Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, the Oregon Association of School Librarians (OASL) Intellectual Freedom Committee, and the ACLU of Oregon will once again be working together to promote the celebration of the freedom to read in Oregon libraries and bookstores during Banned Books Week (September 27 - October 4, 2008) and the entire month of October. Oregon libraries and bookstores are eligible to participate if they plan to have an exhibit, program or any other activity to celebrate the freedom to read anytime from September 27 – October 4, 2008.
